Description:
This is a book I've made for the monthly AreYouBookEnough-challenge on Instagram. This is a bookart community hosted by Sarah Maker that makes a book every month inspired by a certain theme. This is my answer to the theme 'heal'.
The most beautiful kind of healing (repairing) I know, comes from the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which broken ceramics are repaired with gold. I love the philosophy behind this; cracks (and imperfections) are not something to hide, but instead be displayed with pride because it's what makes you unique. It's a testament to life and it adds to ones beauty. I found a similar Japanese approach to repairing textiles called sashiko in which beautiful patterns are stitched on torn fabrics.
My entry is inspired by these two methods of mending, freely translating it to paper. I've glued 'broken' pieces of paper back together with golden glue and stitched and woven the holes with golden threads.
For the structure I used Hedi Kyle's blizzard book construction. I've torn and repaired the folded cover to match the theme of the book.
